Target Audience - extended
Target Audience
I conducted a focus group with my class, whose ages ranged from 16-24. In this focus group our group asked questions, and below are some of the results we found.
Demographic question
Psychographic questionFrom our demographic research, we found out the basics of what/who our target audience is, such as age, gender etc.
From our psychographic research, we found out what things our target audience are into, such as their interests and hobbies. This enabled us to think more deeply about our music video, and target our niche audience more accurately.

Functions of a music video
Functions of a music video
The function of a music video is to promote the artist, and their music to the audience. Another function of a music video is to establish their place in the competitive music industry.
Normally, if performance based then a music video is to present the artist and their music. However if the music video is about the message within the lyrics, then the video will be focussed on the message rather than the artist.

Introduction to the team
Introduction to the team
Our team is made up of Me (Megan), Georgia, and Karolina. We are making a music video based on the Indie genre. We plan to follow the conventions of this genre, and also make it appealing to our audience.
Location shoot/test shoot
Location shoot/test shoot
Our location for the video will be in a studio, as here we can control the lighting, sounds, and overall make higher quality shots. Therefore, our test shots and location shoot was in a studio.

By doing this shoot, we learned what lighting was appropriate and worked best, and we also got an understanding into what our music video could look like. We also could figure out where we could improve in order to get the best shots and angles.

Laura Mulvey's theory
Laura Mulvey's theory
Laura Mulvey's theory is 'The Male Gaze'. She explains how a males dominate the Hollywood industry, which has led to women become objects of 'desire'.
Mulvey explains how women usually have a very passive role in hollywood, and men have a more action role, which emphasises how women are seen as objects.
Mulvey goes on to explain that this has led to the female viewer experiencing the narrative secondarily, by the identification with the male, not the female.
Laura Mulvey's theory can be replicated into the music industry by looking at lyrics sung by male artists. For example, Scouting For Girls sing 'I love the way she fills her clothes'. This talks about a female's curves and assets, and rather than identifying with her the audience and artist view the female as an object.

Audience Representation
This Voki is a representation of our target audience. This has allowed us to have a deeper understanding into who we are targeting with our music video.
Target Audience
Target Audience - Research
Demographic
Psychographics
Demographic
- This reveals some useful information (e.g: age, gender, social class) into what type of audience will our music video appeal to - this will help us use certain conventions to suit our target audience.
Psychographics
- This is information obtained about peoples social behaviour, habits, and preferences for certain products (e.g: values and identities to position audience, lifestyle, and interests) - this information makes it possible to devise categories of our target audience without using economic descriptors.
From searching similar indie artists on YouGov, we found that our target audience is males aged 16-24. They will have a social class of BC1C2, meaning they are between middle and working class.
From YouGov we also found psychographic research, such as lifestyle, activities included high interests in music, and intellectual games such as sudoku. They also have niche interests in homelessness.
From this research our music video should have an underlying meaning which is emotional, however not extremely obvious, as the audience's intellect may look further into the meaning.

Costume List
Costume List
These costumes ideas are influenced by current Indie artists, as they wear lots of vintage style clothes, due to their 'quirky' and individual style of music.
Lyrics Analysis
I want you by my side
So that I never feel alone again
They've always been so kind
But now they've brought you away from me
I hope they didn't get your mind
Your heart is too strong, anyway
We need to fetch back the time
They have stolen from us
So that I never feel alone again
They've always been so kind
But now they've brought you away from me
I hope they didn't get your mind
Your heart is too strong, anyway
We need to fetch back the time
They have stolen from us
Analysis: Artist is lonely, a theme of loneliness can be portrayed in my video.
[2x:]
I want you
We can bring it on the floor
Never danced like this before
We don't talk about it
Dancing on, do the boogie all night long
Stoned in paradise
Shouldn't talk about it
Analysis: Lonely, but cannot talk about it/their feelings.

I cannot find the way out of here
